Op-Ed: By Julian Franco
We the people deserve better
We the people are hurting right now
We the people are losing everything
We the people are behind closed doors
As I write this nearly 1500 citizens of Solvang are seeking food aid.
We are experiencing a Kafkaesque metamorphosis that is only comparable to that of that Great Depression
“Gov. Gavin Newsom says that unemployment in California amid the COVID-19 pandemic has far exceeded what it was during the peak of the Great Recession”
“Governor Newsom noted that the state will need $43.8 billion to cover unemployment claims in 2021, a 650% increase over what was originally proposed.”
“Some 4.7 million Californians have filed claims for unemployment benefits since March 12, compared to 2.2 million in the third quarter of 2010 at the height of the Great Recession.”
Governor Newsom & the State of California cannot do this alone.
We normally have the 5th largest economy in the world; but as you and I know too well…
These are nowhere near “normal” times. The circumstances in which we are living are extra-ordinary.
This is uncharted territory not only for Solvang but for our beloved Golden State.
How will we act? Will, we react? Or will we be pro-active?
This is what characterizes the soul of us here in Solvang, Californians, and the American people.
I invite anyone with the means, to aid during this monumental moment to donate to:
Santa Barbara Food Bank & Solvang-Bethania Church
Remember to Think Global. Act Local.
Together with asked face to another, we can bring our oasis back to its feet.
